I saw that too... Looks like tumblr really is on its last legs. It's kind of weird being on the titanic as it sinks. I'm kind of glad I had naturally started exploring different avenues of online expression before this news dropped, so I at least don't have to have the "oh god where do we go from here" feelings a lot of people are seeming to have.

I'd give it about a year or two before they start actually shutting down the website though. That being said, it feels dishonest to still have the paid elements  (badges, subscriptions, etc) being advertised as "helping keep tumblr alive!!!/saving tumblr!!!!" if they've already given up on the website.

I made my first post to my webdev blog since July (oof) today because according to a screenshot of a leaked letter to Automattic employees, it seems that Tumblr has been deemed a failed project, and will soon be relocating the vast majority of their devs to other divisions.

The looming shadow of a Tumblr shutdown has been in my peripheral vision for a while now, what with Staff's rampant attempts at monetization and all that, but it seems like the end is finally in sight. With the Blue Hellsite (complicated emotions) having been my primary source of socialization for the past eight years, it saddens me deeply to see it have to go. For better or for worse, my time on Tumblr shaped me into the person that I am today.

There are a number of sites out there that have been posited as Tumblr alternatives, but none of them really appeal to me. I think that for now at least, I'd rather focus on boosting the userbase of this forum COUGHpleasereblogmypromopostCOUGHCOUGH and foster a new community of Castlevania fans. Discord has never really been my thing, but maybe I'll try and figure something out there, too.

Sayonara, you weaboo shits. It was fun while it lasted.

I doubt it ever will make a proper return to gaming, and if it does, I imagine they'd take a reboot approach like Lords of Shadow. I hate to say it but I think Konami is fully satisfied sitting on the IP and slurping up Netflix money.

FWIW I never thought project zircon would be anything CV related, the connection to CV via the Zircon item was a massive reach.

Nest of Evil / The Future of Castlevania

One thing I've been wondering about lately is what might be in store for the Castlevania IP in the next couple of years....... Like it or not, the Netflix show has at the very least put the name "Castlevania" back in the minds of the general public, and with Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid both seeing revivals by Konami, it seems that it would be wise for a new Castlevania game to come out while the iron is still hot.

But at the same time, it seems that for all of the new rumors and leaks regarding Castlevania, none of them have been coming to fruition. The leak that predicted the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake said that Konami would reveal their new Castlevania game alongside it, but it's been months with nothing in sight. The "Project Zircon" rumor also ended up being nothing but more NFT bullshit, and every other rumor seems to be dead in the water as well. Is it because the Netflix show is profitable enough that Konami doesn't feel the need to use the IP in any other way? Do they just not think that Castlevania games are worth making anymore? Or are they really working on something, and it's just taking longer than any of us have expected to come out?

Personally, I have two trains of thought on the subject. For one, I do think that a new Castlevania game would absolutely sell in this day and age. With the popularity of retro-inspired indie games, especially of the platform-adventure (or, "Metroidvania") genre, bringing back one of "the OGs" would be a boon for Konami. And with Bloodstained selling over two million copies, more than any of the original Castlevania games, the desire among gaming audiences for Castlevania and Castlevania-like games definitely exists. But on the other hand, I don't necessarily think that Castlevania needs to make a return. As far as the main story goes, there aren't any really big gaps that need to be filled by a full new game, except the Demon Castle War. And really, with twenty years of speculation, theorizing, and fan interpretations, I don't think that anyone could make a DCW game that would be satisfactory and live up to all of the hype that it's generated. As far as I'm concerned, the story of Castlevania is over, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I would much rather see the older games be made available to generate a new audience then see Konami continue to try and expand the lore with new games, or reboot the series yet again with a new gritty, mature series to try and bring in more fans of the Netflix show.

This is a brilliant idea and would address a lot of my issues with Ao3 that made me stop using it. I'm in favor!

I've been flirting with this idea for a while, but after seeing some spoilers for the Dreaded New Show and realizing that my worst nightmares have come true, I'm starting to take it a bit more seriously.

Since Ao3 is open source, I was thinking that I'd like to use the code to make a small fanfic repository for the Castlevania games, especially since the fans of............. a certain shitty adaptation are known to not be very good at tagging their works properly. There probably wouldn't be many changes from Ao3 proper, both because I think it's a very well-made website, and because the majority of the source code is written in Ruby, a language that I don't understand.

And don't worry, I'm not dropping my Castlevania Wiki project for this!! I was putting it on hold for a while because it was pushing the limits of my shared hosting plan, and I wasn't quite ready to start looking at VPS plans just yet. But since I'll be needing a VPS to install Ruby to use the Ao3 source code, I'll probably get working on that soon. Hopefully in a few weeks?

Forum Discussion / In Regards to Castlevania: Nocturne
« Last post by Alucard on September 14, 2023, 08:19:51 PM »
With just two weeks until Castlevania: Nocturne's untimely release, I've made a decision regarding the future of Netflixvania discussion on this forum:

From now on, posting about any of Netflix's Castlevania projects will not be allowed. I'm going to be locking the previous topics on this subject, and any attempts to make new topics will be promptly deleted. There's not going to be any penalty for breaking this rule*, because I think that would be petty and unfair.

It's entirely possible that this ban may be lifted some time in the future, but for now I'm not very interested in dealing with the negativity that Netflixvania brings, especially now that I'm busy with college and don't really have the time to be getting mad at a television show.

*Exceptions will be made if you are clearly acting in bad faith
