I think ROMhack playthroughs are super fun to watch (like the ones on JupiterClimb's channel) but I've never felt a huge urge to play most of them myself. (My favorite hack is probably the improved Dawn of Sorrow one though since it makes that game waaay more playable). As someone who has dabbled with the DSvania editor tool a bit, I think the lack of expansive story-related hacks is because of the way the editor works- you can change text and dialogue in the text boxes but it's very difficult to change when or where those textboxes are shown, so you're pretty much bound to the structure of the original game you're hacking.

I've made a hack myself and it's mostly there to buff Charlotte and makes her a spear user in addition to being a magic user. It also makes it so that all armor can be equipped to either character rather than being gender-restricted. I'll link it here if anyone's curious about it. It's mostly borne from me going "hey wouldn't it be cooler if charlotte had the alucard spear so she could complement johnathan and the whip"

I've also always sort of wanted a Shanoa and Albus hack of Portrait though... It would be cool to see them fight side by side.

General Castlevania ROMhack and fangame thread! Are there any that you like? Any that you've made? Any that you want to make?

Personally, I can't say that I'm much of a ROMhack guy myself, but my interest was piqued by one called Rondo of Ruin, and I found it to be....... pretty disappointing, in all honesty. The difficulty was extremely unbalanced, and I found that some of the inputs for special moves that are required to progress through the game were a bit clunky and hard to execute.

Really, I wish that there were more full Romhacks of Castlevania games like you see with other series (like Pokemon especially), where there are new stories, levels, and even characters, but most of what I find are just difficulty adjustments, special modes, or low effort sprite swaps.

In terms of fangames, though, the pickings seem a lot better. I tend to lurk on the Castlevania Dungeon forums from time to time, and their fanworks board is full of tons of fangames and Vania-likes that clearly have tons of effort and passion that were poured into them, like the Lecarde Chronicles duology, as well as the 1999 Demon Castle War fangame, Umbra of Sorrow (which seems to be on indefinite hiatus at this point, unfortunately).

I've also got some ideas for my own Castlevania pastiche, but that's a project for another day......

Small update on this: I thiiiiink I've configured most of everything to my liking. Right now I'm pretty sure that I just need to finish writing the Code of Conduct and make a quick guide to editing the wiki, then maybe mess around with the CSS a bit and everything should be good to go.

I'm certainly interested!! I would love for a new wiki to exist.

When I first started getting involved with the Tumblr Castlevania fandom back in 2021, I remember a lot of people dunking on the Castlevania wiki maintained by Fandom/Wikia for having a lot of inaccurate/misleading information, and the admins didn't really seem keen on fixing any of this, and would sometimes remove edits that would've corrected certain pages. Combined with Wikia's extreme commercialization of their site and apparent desire to monopolize all fan-made information hubs, I've been wondering if it's perhaps time for Castlevania fans to set out and make our own independent wiki.

I recently made a new subdomain where I downloaded MediaWiki, and I've been fiddling around with it to learn how it works and understand the software. I need a bit more time to fully figure everything out, but I think it could serve as a good starting point.

My one concern is getting people interested— The reason why a lot fan wikis' separation from Fandom/Wikia end up being successful is because the vast majority of administrators, moderators, and contributors agree to make the move together, but with most people involved in the Castlevania wiki being seemingly complacent, trying to get a project like this off the ground will be an uphill battle. Good, strong wikis are generally maintained by dozens, if not hundreds (and in the case of Wikipedia, thousands) of people contributing their knowledge. If an independent Castlevania wiki is going to be successful, we're going to have to manage to convince people that it's worth committing to and staying invested in in the long term.

I do think it's entirely possible to make something like this work. If, at first, while the group of people working on the wiki is still small, everyone focused on making pages for all of the games, then the major characters, and then started narrowing in on more and more niche topics, we could make a decently coherent wiki. It would take a lot of time and effort, but it's definitely doable.

It's pretty mysterious. I remember the cancellation rumours started around when GOS got revived and put on Apple Arcade and I hadn't really heard anything about it since.

Does anyone here know what fate befell the Chinese mobile game Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody? It seemed like we were getting leaks pretty regularly after it was first announced, and then it just...... kinda fell off the face of the earth.

I've seen people claim that it was cancelled, or put on indefinite hiatus, but was there ever any sort of official statement made about it? I haven't heard about it in forever and it feels kind of strange.....
Mechanical Tower / Are there any new releases that you're looking forward to?

Have any upcoming games piqued your interest as of late?

Personally, I'm rather excited for Blasphemous II. From the trailers alone I can already tell that it's going to be better than the first game, especially when it comes to movement and platforming. The devs have also gone on record saying that they're leaning even harder into the Metroidvania genre with Blasphemous II, which has me curious, since I found that the first Blasphemous already had plenty of Metroidvania elements. (Some of the trailers showed damage numbers when attacking enemies..... perhaps there's going to be some sort of Castlevania-like RPG system?)

The developer of ULTRAKILL has also been slowly starting to tease the release of the game's third and final act, but there's no saying just yet whether or not it'll be coming out this year.
I agree with this. It's scared to BE Castlevania, because Castlevania is too earnest/campy/lame/whatever... We have to be gritty and dark!!1!1!1

Thus it becomes an adaptational Ship of Theseus.

Ooh! I think I've watched most of these but still a nice collection.

I have some OOE related interviews linked on my OOE fan shrine that are pretty obscure, you might be interested in that.
