The End of Tumblr?
« on: November 08, 2023, 06:28:59 PM »
I made my first post to my webdev blog since July (oof) today because according to a screenshot of a leaked letter to Automattic employees, it seems that Tumblr has been deemed a failed project, and will soon be relocating the vast majority of their devs to other divisions.

The looming shadow of a Tumblr shutdown has been in my peripheral vision for a while now, what with Staff's rampant attempts at monetization and all that, but it seems like the end is finally in sight. With the Blue Hellsite (complicated emotions) having been my primary source of socialization for the past eight years, it saddens me deeply to see it have to go. For better or for worse, my time on Tumblr shaped me into the person that I am today.

There are a number of sites out there that have been posited as Tumblr alternatives, but none of them really appeal to me. I think that for now at least, I'd rather focus on boosting the userbase of this forum COUGHpleasereblogmypromopostCOUGHCOUGH and foster a new community of Castlevania fans. Discord has never really been my thing, but maybe I'll try and figure something out there, too.

Sayonara, you weaboo shits. It was fun while it lasted.
Play Sea of Stars, you cowards!!!

I saw that too... Looks like tumblr really is on its last legs. It's kind of weird being on the titanic as it sinks. I'm kind of glad I had naturally started exploring different avenues of online expression before this news dropped, so I at least don't have to have the "oh god where do we go from here" feelings a lot of people are seeming to have.

I'd give it about a year or two before they start actually shutting down the website though. That being said, it feels dishonest to still have the paid elements  (badges, subscriptions, etc) being advertised as "helping keep tumblr alive!!!/saving tumblr!!!!" if they've already given up on the website.
